my pinch pots – my process

October 20th, 2009 · 2 Comments · ceramics

so, it’s time to make some more pinch pots! i’m almost all sold out of the first two batches. i got a little attached to a few of them and they are staying with me. but for the most part, they’re all gone. (thanks to family and friends!)

this time, i thought i’d bring you along on my journey. i started last night. and didn’t take photos of the “during”. i’ll do that soon. but, the first step is to make a hollow ball by combining two pinch pots. and then working them into a nice smooth, or mostly smooth, sphere.

like this…

i’m going to let them dry out a bit and then start on the next step, craving!

What do you mean about carving and letting dry in that huge form. Did you not pinch with your fingers and literally carve out your design?

    Hi Debbie,
Sorry for the vague explanation. Yes, I pinch the form with my fingers. I then let the sphere dry to just almost leather hard and start carving my designs. This is also the time when I carve out a large hole or two for the top of the pot and where to plants peek out of. I will also carve a small hole in the bottom for drainage. When I’m satisfied with my design and placement of all holes, I let the vessel dry all the way to the greenware stage. Then, it’s off to the kiln.
I hope this answers your question!
    Thanks for writing in.
    Sonia
